Protecting forests alongside their guardians

Protecting living environments, managing resources responsibly and supporting local conservation.

Communities are the forest’s first guardians

Communities are the forest’s first guardians

With Indigenous Pygmy and Piri communities, PPSDR protects threatened species in two community forest concessions: Masekeseke (Grauer’s gorillas, giant pangolins and chimpanzees) and Amekoni Mange (okapi, pangolins, forest elephants and L’Hoest’s monkeys).

Knowing the land to protect it better

Knowing the land to protect it better

Community-led participatory mapping of Masekeseke, in the Muumbue massif, identified priority investments: four bridges and 12 drainage channels, rehabilitation of the primary and secondary school, a health centre, a small agricultural market and three sources of safe water.

Five commitments to great apes

  • Awareness of gorilla protection
  • Environmental education
  • Preventing deforestation
  • Reducing poaching
  • Promoting ecological agriculture

The East Kivu–Kinshasa corridor

Our work takes place in the East Kivu–Kinshasa green corridor. The Lubero River separates the Elimu Nzoa group from the Bapere sector before joining the Lindi, a natural boundary between North Kivu and Tshopo, where the Kumu community also contributes to conservation.

A healthy living environment for everyone

PPSDR supports communities in protecting their environment, valuing local spaces, improving sanitation and adopting practices that contribute to sustainable rural development.
